AUGUST 27, 2014
The first thing I plan when entertaining is my color theme. It’s my canvas for the evening and impacts everything from the place settings, to what I’m going to wear and how I’m going to dress my table. I have always loved the combination of sleek black and fresh white- in both the RTW collection as well as on my dinner table.
It gives a graphic pop and allows me to add interest by using unexpected elements as decor.
On the runway, I love to mix a variety of prints and textures and find the table is no different. I start with fabric and finding something that will set the tone for pattern and texture. I buy old textiles on most every trip and usually use one of my finds when setting a table- using it as a table cloth or even a runner. I recommend investing in a quality set of white plates as these can be used for almost any color setting. I like to layer on top of that with patterned salad plates, graphic bowls, napkins and even glassware that both compliment and contradict. For added décor, I walk around my house and pick various things from different rooms that will work – taking vases off shelves, using an old set of dominos, small black and white porcelain figurines, or even black candles with white candlesticks. I tend to stay away using flowers and find I am more drawn to items like fig branches, succulents, and the Texan in me loves a good old cotton boll.
Last but not least, I figure out what combination of black & white I will wear myself as nothing says chic like matching your dress to your dinner table!
